New Perceptions : Adult Program
Services
Requests for Services/Referrals
Referrals are accepted from individuals, community agencies, and other professionals. A phone assessment with the client proceeds the evaluation. Requests for services may be made by phone, or in person. Intake Screener will explain services and assess a prospective client's appropriateness for our programs. The Intake Screener can also provide referral information if the client is in need of other services. An initial contact sheet is completed by the Intake Screener and an appointment is scheduled. If the Intake Screener determines inpatient treatment is necessary, a referral will be made to Perception House, our residential facility.
All requests for services are handled in a timely manner. Clients are given the earliest available appointment. Intake appointments are available during the morning and afternoon.
Evaluations and Intakes
New Perceptions provides chemical dependency evaluations to individuals who are referred from a variety of sources in the community: social service agencies, the Office of Adult Probation, the judicial and legal systems, Employee Assistance Programs, and other treatment facilities. Both the Chemical Dependency Evaluation and the general intake interview are conducted by clinicians who have been trained in substance abuse.
Individual/Group Counseling
Through group and individual counseling, individuals learn to accept responsibility for their actions, recognize and understand their problems, become more self-reliant and self-confident, set realistic goals, and develop alternatives to addictive behavior. Group counseling is the primary treatment modality.
Couples/Family Counseling
Families and couples learn about the effects of substance abuse and other addictive disorders on their personal relationships, and ways they can change formerly destructive patterns.
Bilingual (Spanish) Treatment Latino Services
The Windham area's Hispanic population is approximately 35%. New Perceptions' Willimantic has bilingual/bicultural staff to provide screening, assessment, and treatment in both English and Spanish. Because of the history of treatment success with Latino Clients, New Perceptions is part of the DMHAS Latino Outreach Initiative.
Criteria for Readmission
A client's motivation for readmission is assessed by the clinical staff and a readmission contract with client is agreed upon. The contract may have the client agree to measurable objectives such as attendance at AA meetings or other tasks before the client is readmitted to treatment.
Urinalysis
Random urine samples are required from all clients at least monthly, and at the discretion of staff to screen for alcohol/drugs. Failure to comply is viewed as a "dirty urine." Urine samples are witnessed (of the same sex) by a staff member to insure the integrity of the test.
