Latino Outreach Goals
The goal of the Latino Outreach Initiative is to build trust between the Spanish speaking residents of northeastern Connecticut and existing substance abuse treatment providers, to insure that all Latinos have access to high quality and appropriate services for themselves and their loved ones.
Specifically, our Treatment Advocate assists the Spanish speaking population of northeastern Connecticut through:
- providing individuals with information about different treatment options, and offering support and encouragement to these individuals and their families.
- facilitating referrals to substance abuse treatment and /or detox.
- providing transportation to detox and to residential treatment.
- following up with clients to insure that they are receiving services that are culturally sensitive and language appropriate.
- conducting in-home visits for individuals / families who need additional support and follow-up.
The Treatment Advocate spends a great deal of time in the community, making himself available to those who feel uncomfortable about meeting in an office setting. The program has regular office hours Monday and Thursday for 9am - 10:30am & Wednesday for 4pm - 5pm at the New Perceptions office on 90 South Park Street in Willimantic.
Cultural Sensitivity and Information trainings are also provided by the Initiative on a regular basis to area social service providers. These trainings and presentations are conducted by the Treatment Advocate and/or a New Perception's bilingual Master's level clinician. Information covered includes and overview of specific assessment / treatment methods that can be used in both retaining Latinos in treatment and helping them maximize their experience.
