AIDS Risk Reduction Outreach Worker Program
HIV/AIDS Prevention Information
A.R.R.O.W. 2011 Program Update
Funded by the Department of Public Health, the ARROWs have reached 3,200 clients through HIV/AIDS prevention education, HIV counseling and testing, and Drug Treatment Advocacy. The most dramatically improved intervention has been the Drug Treatment Advocacy, an intervention with an HIV prevention integrated component to help substance abusers enter treatment. The ARROWs maintained a caseload of 65 individuals which involved establishing long-term recovery goals and helping them reduce their risk of HIV infection and the risk to partners. Of this 65, the ARROWs placed 35 into treatment with SCRC, Stonington Institute, ADRC, Connection, CVH, CASA, Pathways, Perception Programs-Outpatient Services, Rushford, and SCADD.
The ARROWs continues to provide testing and HIV/AIDS prevention education at designated sites such as Access Shelter, Milestone, Pathways, the Soup Kitchen, WRCC, and the ARROW office. Additionally, the ARROWs provided HIV testing at 3 community events: World AIDS Day activities sponsored by WRCC; the Community Health Fair sponsored by the Little Angles; Stand Down, sponsored by the VA and Eastern Connecticut State University. In addition to testing, the ARROWs completed three cycles of “Safety Counts,” a cognitive-behavioral intervention which focuses on risk reduction and harm reduction strategies for adult substance abusers who are not in treatment.
